Keyword research: a key element of SEO & Content Marketing

Many business owners see SEO and content marketing as separate, but columnist Trond Lyngbø argues that solid keyword research can and should be used to inform content marketing strategy.

Imagine that you are in an auditorium, facing a large audience of your best customers. You’re getting ready to speak to them.

You can say whatever you want, but there’s just one condition: As soon as you complete your first sentence, people can decide whether to stay inside and listen to the rest of your speech — or get up and leave.

What will you tell them in those crucial first moments?

This is a dilemma every business owner, blogger and content producer agonizes over every day. A visitor to your website decides within a few seconds if she is going to stick around and explore it or leave for another destination.

Unless your content is carefully planned and masterfully crafted based on a deep and intimate understanding of your target audience’s needs, your SEO initiatives will likely fail or underperform. Keyword research and analysis is one of the most critical elements of your content preparation, planning and production.

Key questions to consider here are:

  • How do you link SEO and keyword analysis to content marketing?
  • How do you produce content that your prospects will find irresistible?
  • How can you expand, grow and consolidate your profitability with an intelligent content strategy?
  • These are questions we’ll address in this column.

How to tell your story
In one of my most popular posts on content marketing and SEO, I highlight the important element of effective content marketing:

Tell stories that people find interesting.

But how can you know what they will respond to?

You can keep your eyes and ears open and observe what’s happening in your niche — but that takes time, and you’ll only scan a tiny segment of your market.

You can conduct formal surveys of customers and prospects — though there’s always a risk they might mislead you, for various reasons.

Or you can use a very reliable tool: search engines!

People type queries into the search box that are of interest to them. If you can leverage tools like Google Trends, Google Predictive Search, Google Keyword Planner and KeywordTool.io to mine this rich treasure trove of keyword data and identify patterns, you’ll soon have a pretty good idea of what your audience wants.

You can use search engines to find out what worries people, what interests them, which problems they want solved and which desires they dream of having fulfilled.

Know what your people want
Unless you involve keyword research and analysis as a part of your SEO content preparation and planning, you’re spinning your wheels. With strong keyword data, you can communicate better, prioritize your SEO content in accordance with your market’s requirements and engage visitors more deeply to convert them into buyers with less time, effort and expense.

Knowing your customers is the key here. Your keyword research should help illuminate what they want and why they want and need it. From there, you can determine how your product helps them solve their problems and achieve their goals.

This knowledge helps you strategically plan your content marketing and brings several benefits to your business.

1. Better understand your customers
When your content seems to magically answer their unvoiced questions, visitors arriving at your website via search engines will be highly impressed.

Keyword research and analysis helps you to understand your prospective customers. By knowing what search terms they use to find your product or service offerings, you gain insight into their needs and desires — what problems they want solved, what they expect to find on a destination website and so on.

By reviewing the keywords searchers are using — and closely analyzing the search results that surface for those keywords — you can tell, with reasonable accuracy, where a searcher is on the decision-making continuum that ends in closing a sale.

For example, if you run a hotel website, then a visitor arriving at your site from a search on generic or broad terms (like “Norway holiday”) is less likely to book a room than one who is running more specific queries (like “budget hotel in Oslo” or “Oslo hotel vacancy 15th March”).

Thus, if you’re receiving significant traffic from visitors searching on these generic terms, you might want to consider creating and optimizing content that better speaks to their needs and is designed to move them further down the sales funnel.

When your content is designed to match user intent, you will grab attention instantly — and retain it for as long as you meet your visitor’s unspoken needs.

2. Communicate more effectively
Another advantage of keyword research and analysis is that your communication will be more effective, targeted and specific. Your content can be crafted in a manner such that a reader intuitively feels that you are “speaking their language.”

You develop empathy more easily. You connect more deeply. Engage with more sincerity. Convince, educate, inform and guide more meaningfully. And all of this happens because you meet the user where they are at the moment and lead them toward a destination that you know they want to reach.

With keyword research, you can construct content that perfectly targets your message while appealing to visitors who use specific search terms to find you. Each piece of content can be individually designed to speak to a specific, clearly defined segment of your overall market.

When your message is so finely targeted at a particular interest group or niche audience, it becomes very effective at getting prospects to do what you want. Conversion rates are higher. Marketing expenses go down.

3. Plan content more easily
Strong keyword research allows you to correctly prioritize content. It can inform your editorial calendar, as you’ll have a reasonable idea of what content is most in demand and when it is likely to deliver the greatest impact on your business goals.

If you focus on the right keywords and plan accordingly, your content will reach prospective customers right at the moment they are starting to look for it.

4. Go beyond relevant - be memorable
Many SEO and content experts recommend creating “relevant content” for your target keywords. But relevant content is no longer adequate; it isn’t ambitious enough. As search engine algorithms grow more sophisticated and are better able to surface accurate results for a given query, your “relevant” content will just drown in an ocean of other “relevant” pieces.

Instead, you should aim to create amazing content — the kind that makes your website the ultimate destination for your audience. To win at SEO, your content should go above and beyond that of your competitors, anticipating any and all questions a visitor might have (based on the keywords they’re using) and answering those questions fully.

An excellent content strategy will force people to remember you. It is good for branding. Others may even link to your content; if you’re lucky, you’ll receive high-quality backlinks from authority websites in your niche, including newspapers, industry leading sites and thought leaders who will share it on social media. All this improves your SEO and drives more free traffic your way.

5. Combine creativity with data
Many people think working with keyword data cramps creativity in content. It doesn’t have to be an either-or choice. You can be creative while using search data effectively.

The truth is, without data, you run the risk of wasting time and money on content that won’t move you closer to your business goals. Without granular and detailed keyword data, you’re just another person with an opinion, wasting your (or your client’s) money on a risky gamble.

Stop taking chances and secure your business’s future by basing your content marketing on solid search data and knowledge.

Implementing keyword research in your business
Are you beginning to see how great an impact keyword-focused content can have on sales, revenue and profit? If you’ve been ignoring this aspect of SEO for a long time, you are probably damaging your business, limiting its potential and holding yourself back from maximizing revenue.

With the right guidance on keywords and a smart content strategy, you’ll be able to communicate more effectively with customers. When you know your readers’ innermost thoughts and can intuit their intent, it is easy to reverse-engineer this insight so that it is mirrored in your content.

Doing this dramatically improves the level of engagement with your audience. People no longer merely like your content… they love it. They’ll share it with others. And come back for more of it. They’re influenced and informed by it. And this, in turn, improves conversion rates, generating more sales and higher profits.

While content is just a small part of the overall SEO landscape, it’s an important part. Make sure that you get it right!

Choosing an SEO Firm to Market Your Website

Search Engine Optimization is not just a luxury anymore. If you want a powerful and effective website that brings traffic and results, SEO is an absolute must. But choosing the right firm can be tricky, especially if you're not familiar with what SEO firms should actually be doing. Here are some tips to help you, as well as some warning signs to watch out for when choosing an SEO firm to market your website.

Pricing

When choosing an SEO firm, you will obviously want to get the best bang for your buck. However, because SEO firms usually offer different pricing for different services and lengths of terms, price shopping can be complicated. Things to look out for:

  •  The SEO firm should be clear about all fees and the services included with those fees, upfront.
  • Most will require some sort of initial payment, but will usually draw up a payment plan for the remainder of your term; avoid firms that require full payment up front. If you want to pay in full, that's fine, but requiring it should be a red flag.

Length Of Service

Most SEO firms will offer several options for length of service. How long is best? It depends. Generally, a 3 month term is the absolute minimum you need in order to see real results. Most people start out with a 6 month term, as it is long enough to see results but not too long if you aren't happy with your firm. Just remember, if your SEO firm is reputable, the longer your term the better results you will likely see.

Why So Long?

It's important to understand why continued SEO service produces better results. SEO is not like remodeling your kitchen, where you do it once and relax for 20 years; the very nature of SEO requires continual maintenance, monitoring, and tweaking. Search engines report that keyword searches are constantly changing, and their algorithms shift on a daily basis now. Any good SEO firm understands this, and will continually monitor your rankings and work to increase them.

Make Sure They Are Ethical

Like much in this world, there are SEO firms that are above board, and there are those that are not. Obviously, go with the one that uses honest, white-hat methods for optimizing your website. A reputable, ethical SEO firm uses content building, blogs, social media networking and link building as part of their strategy.

  • Ethical SEO firms will have no problem giving you references or testimonials from other clients. Impressive results speak for themselves and any good firm will be glad to show off their successes to you.
  • A good SEO firm should also provide you with monthly reports showing your site's rankings, stats, and charting its growth.
  • The staff at your SEO firm should be willing and available during business hours to answer any questions you may have.

Beware Of The Following Red Flags And Avoid These Firms Like The Plague:

  • Never use a firm that practices keyword "stuffing". This unethical practice entails loading a web page with targeted keywords strung together in nonsense paragraphs for the purpose of increasing search engine rankings. However, the search engines got wise to this form of cheating and now give poor rankings to any pages using this technique.

  • Avoid firms that claim they have special techniques, or preferred relationships with Google. There is no magic secret to SEO. Continuous maintenance, fresh content, and hard work are what works and any firm claiming otherwise is hiding something.
  • No reputable SEO firm can guarantee immediate results, a precise number of visitors, or even a certain ranking within a certain amount of time. These grandiose statements may sound good, but it is impossible to predict exact timeframes or numbers. An honest firm might tell you that they will work until they have achieved a certain goal, but promising to deliver specific results in a slated amount of time should be a warning to you.

Why SEO Comes First

I’ve been an SEO for many years and during that time I’ve worked with all sorts of web developers – each with their own mix of talents and enthusiasm. For all their hard work, good intentions and passion, generally speaking they’ve all been a massive dud when it comes to one particular aspect of online marketing: search engine optimisation.

It’s not the fact that web designers tend to be bad at SEO that’s the problem – in fact I’m glad they are otherwise there would be no work for people like me. The problem starts when they claim that they do understand it, partly in order to secure the work.

And for the record, whilst I wholeheartedly appreciate that there is a distinction between designers and developers, I have found each are guilty protagonists, so I apologize if I use these terms interchangeably. If pushed I would also say that your average Mac user knows far less about SEO than your average PC user (and take from that what you wish), but as I am about to explain, having a little knowledge could well be worse than having none at all.

Web Designers’ Views on SEO

Generally, when you ask a web designer what he or she knows about SEO – if their sun-starved faces don’t completely go blank – they may talk about title tags, pretty URLs and maybe even a sitemap.

What’s for certain is that they won’t discuss anything other than the on-site technical aspects of their websites.

That’s fine – these are important parts of optimization and many designers don’t even get that far. I’ll go further and say thank goodness that the days of frames are long gone whilst the irony of not a single Flash website showing up in Google for the phrase “Flash website” isn’t lost on an SEO.

So, let’s consider a typical scenario. Along comes your average relatively clueless client to a web designer studio and they (or their sales team) go through the sales process, show them how great their existing clients’ websites look and demonstrate their excellent hosting plans as the client nods along enthusiastically to the sales patter.

Five minutes before the sales meeting closes, the clients ask about this SEO they’ve read so much about. The design team issues a final gush about how all their sites are search engine friendly and will easily be found by the spiders and what’s more, they even install Google analytics for free! And so the deal is done.

Six months down the line and sales on the client’s site are lackluster, traffic is low and the return on investment is negligible. Along comes an SEO, and before he can even say “Your site has canonicalization problems and no call to action”, the client’s defences are up. He’s already “had SEO done” and it didn’t’ work – anyway, he’s now spending his marketing budget on Yell.com and an advert in the local press.

Thank you, Mr Web Designer – another potential client gone, another website without a marketing plan and another detractor of SEO as a profession.

SEOs’ Views on Web Design
Let’s flip this around and ask an SEO about Web Design and – if they even find the time away from their ridiculous workload to answer – they may talk about HTML, headers, bodies and footers and maybe a bit about PHP or CSS. Ask them if they can also provide a website and they would have no hesitation in referring you to someone else who knows better – probably someone they are connected to through a LinkedIn account.

In the same way a car mechanic might be a dab hand at making a vehicle go faster, he wouldn’t for one second assume he’s also best suited to then race it. Web designers have to detach what they do from anything to do with what a contemporary SEO would do.

Web designers are hurting the search marketing industry at the very source. When clients whose understanding is only as good as the person who is telling them think that SEO is what web designers do, we’re at the bottom of a big uphill battle.

This is the fundamental problem – web designers are the gatekeepers. They are client’s first port of call and because their work is what the client sees and understands, it is they who influence the site’s design and functionality.

It’s generally up to the SEO to then clean up the mess and rectify the oversights the developers and clients between themselves have left. This is never good news – just as no mother likes to hear that their children are ugly, no web designer likes to be told their site needs changing.

Why SEO Comes First
The following list skims the surface of what a good SEO will do for their client. Immediately, it is clear that our responsibilities go way beyond onsite optimization and whilst the term SEO remains, our role and scope is considerably wider ranging. If there is a web developer out there who considers all of these aspects, then good on you – but I doubt you have time to do all this as well as design websites.
  • Site Accessibility
  • Keyword Research
  • Content Creation/Strategy
  • Link Acquisition
  • Social Media
  • Pay Per Click
  • Search Protocols
  • Community Involvement
  • Local Search
Putting the Cart Before the Horse
Two parts of what an SEO provides are largely ignored by web designers, much to the disaffection of their clients: Keyword Research and Traffic Acquisition.

Keyword research should be the starting point of any web build. If you do not know what your prospective customers are looking for, how do you know what words the site should be optimised for? Formula One designers consider the tracks their cars are going to go around before they build the cars. Fisherman consider what fish they are after before they choose the nets they use. Why wouldn’t a website be built and optimized for the words they need to target?

The second and most important part of SEO which web designers fail to recognise is how the site is going to generate traffic. How and why should the site you are building get traffic and make sales? Pretty images and compliant code doesn’t get you very far.

Web developers rarely consider the strategy of how to make this happen: whether the solution is ultimately through content marketing via a blog, attracting inbound links through link bait or integrating a solid social media strategy, making these decisions before the site is built makes a huge difference to any website’s ROI.

Separation of Responsibility
Each party cannot be expert across the other’s discipline. It is important that each party has an understanding of the other.

What Web Designers need to concede and explain to clients is that whilst their sites may be search engine friendly, they are not offering SEO.

To claim anything else undermines our fledgling profession and misleads clients. We have enough bad SEOs doing that already!

Hire SEO Expert

Do you have an online business targeting the Canadian market? Or are you residing or doing business in Canada? If you are, then for sure you have been looking for different methods to boost up sales and yet you have failed to succeed.
This is where hiring an expert takes into the picture. Have you heard about SEO? Always remember, in business time is money. You do not want to waste every second of your day reading and analyzing what SEO is. You could have use all those hours and days or even weeks to negotiate with investors, gain more customers and etc. As they say, leave this one to the expert.
This is where an SEO expert takes into the picture. He or she is the right person to call. First, such person obtained good knowledge about the Canadian market and the purchasing power of the public.
Second, he or she has an in depth knowledge of what strategies and techniques to use in order to increase traffic which in return bring in more sales for business.

Just because they are expensive it does not mean they can deliver quality services and not because they are cheap it does not mean that they offer crap services.
You must weigh your options first and compare your chosen SEO experts that you have gathered around through online research. Analyze, if you want you can go ask further inquiries in order to test how well-verse are they in their field of expertise and to check if they are talking for real or it is more sales talk at the end of the day.

Requirements for Site Optimization

Remember that one of the minimum requirements to put into practice the techniques of search engine optimization is to comply with international rules of the W3C HTML HyperText Markup Language and XHTML .

Sites built with modern technology (Web 2.0) that are in accordance with international rules can help a lot in relation to Search Engines, in many respects. In many cases, the use of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and XHTML to build the layout and content pages can make the difference due to the factor of how search engines work to make the indexing of sites across the internet. Pages with excessive use of tables can be a risk factor during the visit of a Google Robot for example.

Some professional Search Engine Optimization (SEOs) divided the methods and techniques used in two categories as white hat SEO 'and' black hat SEO .

White Hat techniques methods generally approved by the Search Engines in the application of SEO techniques, such as building content and improving site quality.

Black Hat techniques tricks such as cloaking (cloaking the actual content of the page) the 'filling' and 'repetition of key words, usually in excess, and the practice of spamdexing to try to apply the techniques of SEO. The term' spamdexing (originated from the fusion of spamming and indexing) refers to the practice of spam directed at Search Engines.

Using the techniques of SEO or Search Engine Optimization always try to adopt the posture most honest, ethical, consistent and rational, which is exactly the 'building content clearly an issue’ to the subject or theme of your web site. Simply just put yourself in the position of a person who performs a search on Search Engines and receives between results pages links to a site with misleading content, which does not correspond to reality and which used the keywords searched only with the intention to increase the flow of visitations to the site.

Five SEO Tips for Driving Search Engine Traffic

There are many misconceptions about search engine optimization (SEO) that have sprung up over the years, says Jill Whalen, CEO and founder of High Rankings, that make it difficult for those in charge of online traffic to know exactly how to optimize their Web sites correctly. Here Whalen shares five on-page tactics that professional SEO companies use to drive the most targeted search engine traffic possible to their clients' Web sites.

Do your keyword research. Keyword research is the cornerstone of everything you do in search marketing. Optimizing for keyword phrases that nobody is searching for is truly a waste of time. With today's numerous keyword research tools at our disposal, there's no excuse for optimizing for the wrong keywords. Try Google's free Keyword Tool for starters; if you have multiple Web sites or product types, paid subscription tools such as  Keyboard Discovery and/or Wordtracker are well worth the price.

Redo your Web site architecture. You'll want to ensure that the most popular areas of your site (ideally the pages you optimize) are featured in the main navigation that's on every page of the site. The search engines rightly assume that the most important stuff on your site is in your main navigation, and therefore give extra weighting to those pages in their ranking formulas.

Think of it this way — the pages contained in your main navigation are linked to from every single page of your site. That's a powerful way of building up the internal link popularity of those pages, which is a key ingredient to SEO success. Use this to your advantage by optimizing them for the most highly searched upon, competitive phrases, and save your deeper pages for the more "long-tail" type phrases.

Choose which keyword phrases belong on which pages. Armed with your researched keyword phrase lists, go through the key pages of your site and choose three to six phrases that apply to each page. Many people believe they should optimize each page for only one keyword phrase, but nothing reads as poorly as a page that has only one keyword phrase as its focus.

Ideally, you'll want to use different sets of keywords for each page, but some overlap is fine. Avoid targeting any one keyword phrase on every page of your site — you gain no advantage in doing so. After all, the search engines will only show two pages at most from your site for any search query, so the idea is to show up for as many different phrases as possible. This works out nicely as no two people search in the same manner. You may use certain words to describe your product, but your prospects may use very different ones.

Use keyword-rich title tags, meta descriptions, marketing copy. Using the keyword phrases you chose for each page, write or re-write the visible marketing copy so that it uses those phrases naturally. This may sound easier said than done, but it's actually quite simple . just think more descriptively when you write.

In other words, instead of using generic phrases such as "our software" or "our company," edit the copy so that you mention what type of software or company (e.g., marketing management software or project management software company). You can almost always work in keyword phrases in a natural manner when you do this. This is so powerful, in fact, that if you do nothing else after reading this article but go back to your current web site copy and make those changes, you may start gaining targeted traffic for those keyword phrases within a few weeks.

Measure success from targeted traffic and conversions. SEOs have traditionally measured success by tracking the rankings in the search engines for various keyword phrases. However, due to numerous factors such as personalized search, geo-targeted search and multiple search engine datacenters, no two searches will show the same results.

In fact, it's common to do a Google search using a particular phrase in the morning, then perform the same search in the afternoon and see different results. Rankings are simply not a good measure of success. All the #1 rankings in the world won't mean a thing if a) you're the only one seeing those rankings b) you're ranked for keyword phrases nobody is searching on or c) the rankings bring Web site traffic, but not from people interested in what you are selling. The fact of the matter is that rankings do not help your bottom line. Today, SEO success is measured by how much targeted traffic is delivered, and more importantly how much of that traffic converts from visitors to buyers.

Following these five tactics will undoubtedly take some time and hard work. SEO is not a quick-fix endeavor. However, this type of investment in your Web site's infrastructure will pay high dividends later as your targeted traffic increases, ultimately leading to additional leads and sales. A professional SEO campaign is a long-term proposition that often provides an extremely high return on investment . so be sure you get it right.
